Part 1

The Pine Point digital story is a documentary film about a Canadian mining town that has evolved due to the unavailability of mining resources that resulted in the closure of the company, people relocated and the land has been inhabited. The documentary comprised of elements of a digital story which focus on a clear point of view, the sound track is suitable, and the graphics are appealing to the audience to conveyed the story.

A gloomy, haunting and melancholy effect is portrayed with the type of music used however, it enabled the audience to make connections with the emotions of the authors throughout the story.  The use of the graphics allows one to visualize and create a mental image of the town before and after the downfall. It also stimulates engagement, enhance comprehension of the concept being portrayed and simplify complex information. 

There are interactive opportunities incorporated in the story that enabled the viewer to utilize the click feature to learn more about the different sequence of scenes of the Pine Point community.   The Saskpower building, biography of iconic singer Kimberley Feodorff, engagement outside of work and the upward mobility of Pine Pointers are some of the things that you learn through the interactive apsect.

Part 2

The digital story of Pine Point can be used to develop academic skill, enhance critical thinking, stimulate collaborative discussion and foster Social Emotional Learning.  Migration and relocation, historical place, and storytelling are content areas in Social Studies and Language Arts that are addressed by the creation of the Pine Point story.   

ISTE student standards Empowered Learner :1.1d Technology Fundamentals, Knowledge Constructor: 1.3.a Effective Research Strategies and 1.3.c Curate Information,  Creative Communicator: 1.6.a Choose Platforms or Tools and 1.6.d Customize the Message were addressed in the Pine Point digital story. The author used digital tools, research data, artefacts and other resources to compile the story that engage and enhance learning. Video is also used as a platform to inform the audience of the story.

Upper elementary to middle school is the target audience of this interactive documentary story. Narrative writing of a place that have significance meaning to the students utilizing narrative elements for example sensory details, the use of a research simulation task of analyzing the story content with additional related paired materials, and identifying theme with supported textual evidence, Authors Perspective and Point of View are some of fifth grade content area instruction that are derived from the story. Themes of geography such as location, place, human/environment interaction, and region, migration and research are also connected content areas.

Part 3

Based on Ohler's and Lambert's guidance for story creation it is evident that the author of the Pine Point  digital story applied the development process to execute and communicate an effective story. The core of the story addressed the problem, transformation and resolution. Elements of digital story was also incorporated for the creation of the story as it relates to the emotional aspect that resonate with the audience, insight that gives clarity, visuals and graphic are relevant and connected to the story. Also the compilation and sharing of the story were all evident factors.

    I so enjoyed reading your post. It sounds like you've got a great working plan. It's evident that you understand the factors within a successful story after exploring the Pine Point story. I like how you said, "A gloomy, haunting and melancholy effect is portrayed with the type of music used however, it enabled the audience to make connections with the emotions of the authors throughout the story." Being able to use emotional appeal within a story is a great way to ensure your message is well received. I can't wait to see your finished product!
